Your tattoo is fresh artwork and healing skin at the same time. Treat it gently.
Always follow the specific guidance provided at your appointment. General tattoo aftercare includes:
- Wash your hands first. Clean hands are the opening act.
- Remove the bandage as directed. If it sticks, soften it with lukewarm water. Do not yank it away like you are opening a stubborn pickle jar!
- Wash gently. Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Rinse away dried fluid and excess ointment.
- Pat dry. Use a clean disposable paper product. Avoid rubbing.
- Apply only a thin layer of recommended ointment or moisturizer. More is not better. Your tattoo does not need to wear a frosting hat.
- Avoid soaking. Skip bathtubs, pools, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, and oceans until the tattoo has healed.
- Avoid picking and scratching. Flaking and itching can be part of healing. Let the skin shed naturally.
- Protect the tattoo from friction and contamination. Choose clean, loose clothing when possible.

Mild redness, tenderness, swelling, clear fluid, and light flaking may be normal during early healing. However, contact a healthcare professional if you notice spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, severe pain, thick discharge, foul odor, fever, or symptoms that are getting worse.
Piercing Aftercare: Keep It Calm and Clean
Piercing aftercare works best when it is simple. Clean it, protect it, and leave it alone.
For most body piercings:
- Wash your hands before touching the area.
- Use sterile saline wound wash with 0.9% sodium chloride and no unnecessary additives.
- Allow the saline to rinse the piercing.
- Gently dry with clean disposable gauze or paper products.
- Do not twist, spin, or rotate the jewelry.
- Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh antiseptics, and ointments.
- Keep cosmetics, lotions, sprays, and hair products away from the piercing.
- Avoid unnecessary friction, pressure, and rough handling.
- Keep bedding, phones, headphones, glasses, helmets, and hats clean.
- Avoid soaking in pools, lakes, oceans, and hot tubs while healing.
